Please allow me to introduce myself ... my name
is Sophie ... and after a brief discussion about what my title within
the Eclectic Eccentricity workplace should (or should not!) be, Lucy decided upon the rather fancy title of
'right-hand extraordinaire', which, of course, I gladly accepted.
Anyway, amongst other things, being a right-hand extraordinaire allows
one to witness first hand (so many hands!!) Lucy's creative process.
When a new piece of jewellery appears on the website one could be
forgiven for thinking it has somehow miraculously fallen from the sky
in a neat little bundle, complete with it's own unique name and a story
wrapped around it for good measure. But its not quite like that. Before
a new piece reaches the eyes of the public it has to first go on some
sort of mini road trip: avenues are explored, wrong turnings are made,
right turnings are made, there are roundabouts to contend with and
crossroads to confront .... I don't think its ever got to the point
where Lucy has had to sell her soul to the red chap with the pitchfork,
tail and horns .... but anyway, you get my drift.
One particular piece that has just 'miraculously' appeared in the
studio is a cuckoo clock necklace. Brilliant! Who on earth doesn't love
a cuckoo clock? They are a fantastically bonkers creation and its quite
possible that everyone should own one; a neat reminder not only of the
time but also to not take oneself too seriously.
On a serious note though, anyone who watched Springwatch (we are very
into the birds here at EE) will know there has been a worrying decline
in cuckoo numbers over recent years and this really is a terrible
shame - recent figures suggest the decline is as much as 37% since the mid 1990s. A British springtime without the enchanting call of the cuckoo
is just not cricket!! Cuckoo's, like the clocks that some of them
inhabit, are equally bonkers - laying an egg in other birds nests and
fooling the owners of such nests (usually unsuspecting reed warblers,
meadow pippets and dunnocks) into thinking the baby bird that is about
to hatch is in fact theirs. Which could not be further from the truth!
What baby is bigger than it's parents when it is born!
But, despite their tricksy nature, cuckoos are great. And so are cuckoo
clocks. Which is why Lucy has decided that wearing a miniature version
around one's neck is the next best thing to owning one ... and I have
to say, I agree. Conincidentally I stumbled across a band recently
called 'Cuckoo Clocks' and they have a most excellent song called
'Cuckoo Time'. Enjoy! S xx
