Round about October time we noticed some totally incredible illustrations popping up of gymnastic-looking space girls wearing EE Jewellery and we just had to find out more! Turns out the lady producing these delightful creations is Sara of Sararrochaillustration (above) who lives with her cat and partner in Portugal.
This is the aforementioned astro heroines doing their thing.
This flame-haired space lady is wearing her EPHEMERIS interstellar locket.
Sitting on top of Saturn, rocking another COSMOS piece - obvs.
And in WATCH THIS SPACE, this babe's even a space mermaid!
And then we were treated to pics of Sara herself wearing them. Yippee!
And we got all the feels this week with this beautiful Bowie inspired piece.
So we figured it was time to get to know Sara a little better. Over to you clever lady!
1. Just who the devil are you Sara ? :)
I'm an artist, living in Lisbon, where I was born. Since I was a child art has had a big presence in my life. I’m an only child and I used to spend my free time drawing my favorite anime characters. I was very curious about different techniques and materials and since that period I developed my own style.
As a self-taught artist, I’m very empirical and pragmatic, and I use my art as a catalyst element between myself and the world outside.
At 15 years old I decided that I would study Law, and so I did. I’m a lawyer, apart for being an illustrator.
2. What are your biggest inspirations?
Mostly I get inspired by my daily life, cinema, literature and fashion. My favourite book is L'Étranger by Albert Camus and favourite film is Restless, directed by Gus Van Sant.
3. Where about's do you usually do your illustrations?
I usually work from home in the company of my cat, Maio.. I’d love to spend more time illustrating outside – museums, parks and cafes. But I do love to appreciate the quietness of my place and to have access to all of my materials.
4. Have you got a favourite ever illustration, or one that seems to be the one that people have responded to the most, so far?
It’s difficult to choose one favorite – all of them symbolise an achievement. But I have to say, people have responded very enthusiastically to my versions of Wednesday Addams and Alice in Wonderland.
5. How would you describe your style?
Delicate and whimsical.
6. What is the usual day in the life of Sara Rocha illustrations?
I share my time between my main day job of being a lawyer and illustration. I draw every day but I also try and find time each day to either read, watch movies, tv series and documentaries. The last documentary I've watched Dior and I, directed by Frédéric Tcheng and the last movie I saw was Suffragette.
I also run a little online shop on etsy and I spend some time preparing my orders and doing custom illustrations.
7. Tea or coffee?
8. Party or bed and book?!
Bed and book, definitely!
9. Do you have a favourite EE Jewellery piece?
Currently it is To Infinity! Space Shuttle Necklace (here's Sara wearing her very own one)
10. Who are the space girls in your drawings? ;)
They are explorers, quirky girls with a high sense of fashion too.
Thanks so much for chatting to us Sara, we are very much enjoying being a sometimes muse for you!
